Native American Genealogy Research
Many families have traditions of Indian ancestry. Some have supporting evidence which validates their traditions. Others are unfounded. Your job as researcher is to determine which your family fits into.
- First, you need to identify a specific time period and locality for your ancestor.
- Next, identify the Indian tribe.
- Study the tribe's history
- Determine what records exist for that tribe
- Find out where the existing records are kept
Two guides for finding native records are
American Indians: A Select Catalog of National Archives Microfilm Publications. 1984 ed. Washington, DC: National Archives and Records Administration, 1995. (FHL book 970.1 Un3a; fiche 6125472; computer number 361359.)
Guide to Records in the National Archives of the United States Relating to American Indians. Hill, Edward E. Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1981. (FHL book 970.1 H551g; computer number 154874.)
