Lewis & Thomas King: Pioneer Settlers of Arkell, Puslinch Township, Wellington County Ontario

From England to Arkell: The story of two pioneer settlers, Lewis & Thomas King who left Suffolk England for the Wilds of Upper Canada in 1831

Lewis and Thomas King were brothers born in Wenhaston Suffolk England to parents James King and Hannah Blanden aka Blanding. In October 1830 when Lewis was 37 and Thomas was 34, the brothers joined a group of men and sailed from England to New York. According to written histories, the men arrived in November 1830.

The men were intent on forming a settlement in Upper Canada and after wintering in New York they set out in May 1831 for what would become Arkell Ontario. A list of men said to be in the party includes Thomas and John Arkell, for whom the settlement was named, James Hewer (whose son William married Lewis King’s daughter Sarah), John Outin, James Carter, Joseph Dory, Charles Willoughby and Peter Bell (whose daughter Mary married Thomas King’s son David).

In 1831 Lewis and his wife Elizabeth had 4 children between the ages of 6 and 14 (Sarah, George, Louisa and Hannah), while Thomas and his wife Harriet had one known child - their son David age 14. After wintering in New York the group set out for Upper Canada.

By 1831 settlers could not only travel up the Hudson River in New York to Albany fairly inexpensively, but since 1824 the Erie Canal took them all the way to Buffalo with easy trek to Niagara. From Buffalo to Niagara they had choices. They could continue on foot or by stagecoach, and part of the journey could be by Lake steamer.

From England to Arkell is coilbound 8 1/2x11", 89 pages of documents, photos and stories. The will of Lewis King and the estate papers for Thomas King filed by his widow are among the orignal documents scanned and added to the book. Also included is a Genealogy Report of the Descendants of Lewis & Elizabeth King as well as descendants of Thomas and his first wife Harriet King, to 4 Generations.

A letter was written by John Arkell in 1831 from Farnham Plains (later called Arkell) to his brother Thomas in England. It describes the conditions in the new settlement and province. It provides a wonderful glimpse into the daily lives of the newly arrived settlers from May until December. It has been included in the introduction to the book and helps set the scene for the stories I have told of Lewis and Thomas and their descendants.
