Ontario Assessment Records
The 1818 Nelson Township Assessment, Halton Co. Gore DistrictTranscribed by Fred BlairRevised March 25, 2013 There were a number of columns on the assessment form. The name column was not labelled and the other columns with regular entries were Acres of Land, Uncultivated and Arable Pasture or Meadow, Horses at Three Years Old and Upwards, Oxen at Four Years Old and Upwards, Milch Cows, and Horned Cattle from Two to Four. A few men had acreage in other districts and some men had taxable houses, mills, and merchant shops. Assessment calculations were made in some of the empty columns. This transcription recorded the person’s name, the amount of uncultivated and cultivated acreage, and the transcriber’s remarks on the spelling of names found in other sources, including the 1818 Nelson Township Assessment. A note at the bottom of the assessment recorded 78 people assessed.
