Ontario Census Records 1851 & Earlier
Canadian Census returns vary. The first general Ontario census was taken in 1842, 1848 and 1851 but not all survive. There are scattered census records before 1842 but each area took its own census, so researchers need to check the book of available census returns (found in any public library of Ontario or at the Archives) to find out what years are available in each location. Some areas have census records as early as 1783. Censuses up to 1850 are heads of household only but give extra information such as how many children, and what ages they are.
Census records after 1851 which are available to the public were taken in 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. They give information on all household members - name, age, gender, country of birth, religion, ethnic origin, occupation, marital status and education.
Where to Find Ontario Census Records
Several sites have Census Projects underway which allow you to find ancestors in Canada Census records from 1851 to 1911. Search Canadian Census Records online for your ancestors . Census records are also available on microfilm from the Archives of Ontario, National Archives of Canada, on ILL through a local library, or from your local FHC. See the list of 1851 returns that have been indexed and are available through ILL.
The National Registration File of 1940 resulted from the compulsory registration of all persons, 16 years of age or older, in the period from 1940 to 1946. This is another way to find an ancestor in that time period. This is a Census Substitute. To provide third-party information from the National Registration File of 1940 for genealogical purposes, a standard fee of $48.15 ($45 search fee and $3.15 GST) is charged for each search undertaken that is successful in locating the requested record. A cheque or money order made payable to Statistics Canada is required.
The National Registration File includes the following information on an individual: Name, address, age, date of birth, conjugal status, dependents, country of birth (persons registered and parents only), nationality, racial origin, languages, education, general health, class of occupation, occupation or craft, employment status, work experience by type, mechanical or other abilities, latent skills, wartime circumstances, previous military service. An online order form is provided on Statistics Canada website.
