Part of Returns, nominal rolls and paylists, 1817-1844. Sub-series consists of nominal rolls for the militia of the counties of Addington, Carleton, Dundas, Essex, Frontenac, Glengarry, Gore, Grenville, Haldimand, Hastings, Huron, Kent, Lanark, Leeds, Lennox, Lincoln, Middlesex, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Prescott, Prince Edward, Stormont and York. Volume 31 includes nominal rolls of Capt. John Eakins' company of Rainham, 1831-1832; Walpole Independent Company, 1839- 1842; Toronto Militia Artillery Corps, 1836; Cobourg Volunteer Rifles, 1837; Markham and Vaughan Troop of Volunteer Cavalry, 1837; 2nd Lincoln Infantry Volunteers, 1838; 2nd or Queen's Light Infantry, 1838; 1st St-Catharines Troop of Cavalry, 1838; Bytown Volunteers, 1838; Scots Volunteer Light Infantry, 1838, Royal Foresters, 1838; Major McCormick's Independent Company of Colchester, 1839; and the Newcastle Independent Company, 1839. 1. Abbreviations and short forms of many first names were used in
the source document. These were often indicated through the use
of trailing superscripts, a mark indicative of a tilde or sometimes
a trailing line from the last character. Some of these techniques
defy emmulation with the stanard ascii character set. In this
transcription many of the special short formes are shown merely as
character strings with all of the original art ignored.
2. An "*" in the following transcription indicates a piece of data
which was illegible on the source document. The choice given is
the best the transcriber could do.
