Shainholdts- A Loyalist in Butler's Rangers

Daniel John SHAINHOLDTS of Willoughby, Ontario married Mary VINCENT, daughter of Elijah VINCENT & Abigail BAYEUX. Elijah Vincent was from Eastchester, Chester Co. Pennsylvania.

John Shainholts and his wife are found in Willoughby, Welland County in the 1851 Census for Canada West (now Ontario) as
  • John, farmer born USA, 51
  • Mary, born USA, 56
Their son Elijah is living beside them.

Mary SHAINHOLDTS born 4 July 1785 Pennsylvania, died 28 Apr. 1846 St. Catharines, Ontario, m1 Jacob SNIVELY [a Pennsylvania name going back to SCHNEBELI and SNAVELY] m2 Abraham BOWMAN 1821 Stamford Ontario. Abraham & Mary had one son that I know: Joseph BOWMAN b 1822. I suspect that Mary is a sister to Daniel John SHAINHOLDTS.

Elijah SHAINHOLDTS died in Welland County Ontario in October 1886 age 73 years, 7 months old. He was born in Willoughby Township. [Ontario, Canada Deaths, 1869-1934]. His wife was Mary LEMON. He is said to be the son of Daniel John Shainholdts and Mary Vincent. In the 1842 census they both lived on Concession 5 Lot 16. Mary Vincent received 200 acres in Willoughby Twp. Her father Elijah Vincent also had a grant and died in Willoughby in 1835.

Elijah Shainholts and his family are found next to his parents in Willoughby, Welland County in the 1851 Census for Canada West (now Ontario) as
  • Elijah 39 born Canada
  • Mary 34 born Canada
  • Louisa 15 born Canada
  • John 13 born Canada
  • Sarah 11 born Canada
  • Jacob 9 born Canada
  • Abigail 7 born Canada
  • Christiana 3 born Canada
Elijah and Mary's son John Shainholt born circa 1842 in Welland County, married Annie Buzzard on 1 Jan. 1883 in Welland. John's sister Mary Shainholts, born circa 1852 in Willoughby Township, married Albert E Dell son of Obed & Elizabeth Dell in Welland on 29 Dec 1869. Another brother Daniel Shainholts, born circa 1857 in Willoughby Township, married Elizabeth May Smith in Norfolk County on 6 Sep 1878 [Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1924]

The LEMON line is descended from Lawrence LEMON, Loyalist who came to Niagara. Lawrence was born 1771 Pennsylvania and died 1842 in Niagara. He married Mary WILLSON 1777-1868 daughter of Irish John WILLSON from New Jersey who married. Elizabeth BEATTIE aka BATY and had 15 children.
