On November 23, 1837, British troops under Lt. Col. F. Gore marched south from Sorel to stop the followers of Papineau at St. Denis in Lower Canada, on the Richelieu River. Wolfred Nelson, leader of the Patriot forces, had time to fortify two buildings, which he held for over 5 hours. Gore was forced to withdraw and the rebels were victorious.
