Canadian Military History & Genealogy
Rebellion of 1837
Louis Joseph Papineau
1786~1871
Copyright © 1998
By Lorine McGinnis Schulze
Louis Joseph Papineau led the Parti Canadien, later called the Parti Patriote, forces for Lower Canada (present day Quebec) against the British. His peaceful attempts to force Britain into a more democratic government had failed and he concluded that an American-style revolution was required.
After several defeats, such as St. Denis and St. Charles Papineau fled to the U.S.A. The Rebellion was over.
