Rebellion of 1837Louis Joseph Papineau1786~1871Copyright © 1998 By Lorine McGinnis Schulze Louis Joseph Papineau led the Parti Canadien, later called the Parti Patriote, forces for Lower Canada (present day Quebec) against the British. His peaceful attempts to force Britain into a more democratic government had failed and he concluded that an American-style revolution was required.
After several defeats, such as St. Denis and St. Charles Papineau fled to the U.S.A. The Rebellion was over. Sources:
