Notes: Historian Dr. Henry R. Stiles in his book, "History of the City of Brooklyn" credits Willem Adriaense Bennet with the first step in the development of Brooklyn. In June 1636, Willem Adriaense Bennet and Jaques Bentyn purchased from the Keskaechquerem Indian tribe, later know as the Canarsie Indians, 930 acres of land in the Gowanus area of what became know as Brooklyn. By deed dated 26 December 1639, Bentyn sold his share of the land to Bennet. Various sources mention that Bennet was a cooper by trade, and in primary sources is sometimes referred to as William Adriaensen the cooper. In November 1642 Bennet also purchased property, including a dwelling and brewhouse, in New Amsterdam (now Manhattan), fronting the East River near Maagde Paetje (Maiden Lane). Bennet's ancestors are documented in the recently published book, "William Adriaense Bennet, Descendants and Related Families" c. 1998 by Kenneth A. Bennett, published by Gateway Published Company.

Notes: Family tradition that the name was originally La Force or Delaforce, but the surname Force is found in England as early as 1288 when one Peter de Fors was recorded in London. In 1523 a Peter Force (aka Pierre de la Fosse) left a will at Canterbury. French background but not necessarily Huguenots. Matthew Force first appeared in NY records in 1666 at Gravesend which was an English settlement. Perhaps his father came from Massachusetts with the followers of Lady Deborah Moody. A Peter Force was supposedly a member of the Mayflower crew. Does anyone know about that? --------------------------------------------------
