Dutch buccaneer, Jan Jansen (born in Amsterdam in the late 1500's) and a
Moroccan mother. Antony was born in the port of Fez but lived in Sale
before he immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1630. This tall, dark, and
muscular rogue, who was wild and forceful, was known as "The Turk" or as
the "Troublesome Turk" in some historical documents. He married Grietje
Reiners (Reyniers) a bar maid from Amsterdam who arrived in New Amsterdam
in 1633 on the 'Southberg'. History paints them as an extremely colorful
couple with questionable reputations. They were involved in many petty
slander suits. However, their four daughters were quite respectable and
married into prominent families.

emigrated to this country, A.D. 1660. He settled at Midwout, now
Flatbush, on the west end of Long Island, and was one of the patentees of
that tract of land. His name appears on the tax list as early as 1604
when he bought 100 acres of land on the east side of land owned by
Johannes Christofel. The farm of 100 acres has been located as being
about 1000 feet south of the old Dutch church and running to the old
Coney Island Road, Ave. A, now called Albemarle Road, runs through the
center of it.

Notes: The spelling of the Jurcksen name was
eventually changed in English records, to Yorks/Yerks/Yerxa, all three
lines of which exist today. The family settled primarily in the
Tarrytown area, with many of them attending the Old Dutch Church at
Sleepy Hollow and many buried in that cemetary. The RDCNY census of 1686
has Styntie, widow of Paulus Jurxen, living at the Deacons House for the
Poor on Broad Street in NY City. There are several Court Records for
Albany, Rensselaer- wyck and Schenectady for Paulis and Styntie in the
1660s and 1670s. Descendents of the Yerks line still reside in the
Tarrytown/Ossining area of NY. The family with the Yerxa name were
Loyalists who moved to Canada after the Rev War and then back into the US
through Eastern Maine. Some of the Yorks line moved west across the
Hudson to Haverstraw and later into Ulster County, then migrated, after
the Civil War, to Ohio and Michigan.

Notes: Wolfert Gerretsze VanKouenhoven first came
to New Amsterdam in 1625, one of five head men of the Dutch West India
Co. He farmed Bouwrie #3 located on the east river in what is now N.Y.C
He returned to the Netherlands in 1629 and on Jan 8,1630 signed a lease
for Bouwrie #6 in Manhattan one of the original Dutch West India farms.*
The land could not be purchased, only leased. Van Rensselaer owned
Bouwrie #7.
On Jan 18, 1630 , Wolfert contracted with Van Rensselaer to take a group
of farmers to the new world where he would oversee all Rensselaer's
holdings, establish a farm and build a house at Fort Orange
.(now,Albany.) The party sailed from the Netherlands on the ship de
Eendracht, which cleared the Texel on March 21,1630 and arrived at New
Amsterdam on May 24 1630. By 1932 Wolfert Gerritsz wanted to be
reeleased from his contract and he was., receiving a letter from Van
Rensselaer
addressed to"honerable discreet Wolfert Gerritsz:"I had hoped that you
would have setteled in my colony, but as I am told, your wife was not
much inclined thereto" (VRBM:218.) In 1636 Wolfert acquired property on
Long Island by grant from Indians and at one point owned 3600 acres. He
remained there the rest of his life and died between March 2, 1662 and
June 24 1662..
There wasn't a letter "C" in the dutch alphabet but it wasn't long before
the spelling of the name dropped the K and used C. There were many
different spellings and one line changed to Coonover. Our line of
Couenhovens remained mostly in N.Y.C.,Tarrytown. and some to Iowa and
Minnesota.

Canals" and incorrect genealogy by G. Curry circa 1930
Immigrant's Children:
Notes: According to our genealogy done by Mr.
George Curry, there were 2 brothers who settled in New Netherlands.
The son of one was named Ryck Claes and he purchased land on the north
shore of the Mohawk river in 1672. The book Crossroads and Canals also
states that his sons (Gerrit, Maes, Claes, and Evert) inherited the land
in about 1711. The book also states that the sons took the surname of
Ryckson and Ryckse, but that the surname was so common that they adopted
Van Franke as the surname because that was the origin of the family in
the "old country". Descendants changed it to Van Vranken.

Notes: Jan was the son of Roellof and Aaltje
Elting.
Some say Jan was in New York by 1657. As yet, I have no record to support
this. He was here by August 27, 1662, when he issued a note in favor of
Nicholas Meyer. He settled first at Flatbush, on Long Island, before
moving in 1665 to Kingston, NY. He visited Holland in the winter of 1679-
80. Jan became one of the founders of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, NY in
1686
his date of death is not known for certain. The book "Ancestors of Garret
Conrad Van Wagnen..." states that Jan's land at Rhinebeck was sold by his
"heirs" in 1713. This seems to indicate he had died by that time. His
name is also missing from a 1714 census of Dutchess County. He had
certainly died prior to August 2, 1729, when his heirs executed a quit
claim.
Jacomyntje SLECHT was baptised on July 25, 1645 in Woerdon, Holland. She
was the daughter of Cornelius Barentsen Slecht and Tryntje Tyssen
Bos(ch). Jacomyntje was married twice before meeting Jan Elting. From one
of these marriages were descended Theodore, Franklin and Elanor Roosevelt
(yes, the famous ones). She married Jan on November 24, 1672 at Kingston,
NY. She died after 1686.
I have several pages on Jan wich I will gladly share with anyone who is
intrested. I can be reached at the above E-mail adress. I am intrested in
any information anyone has on Jan or his children. I have tried to be
accurate, but it is possible errors may have crept into my work. If you
