(Source: Tax Lists of the City of New York, 1695-1699, New York Historical Society Collections, 1910, vol 43, p. 77) He was employed as a slave trader in 1698 by the owners of the ship Prophet Daniel bound from New York to the African coast. By 1702, he had established himself as a merchant ship-owner and was junior partner in an import firm which included Onziel Van Swieden in New York and Valentine Cruger in London. He was made a Freeman of New York Province, March 2, 1703, probably on the day of his marriage. (Source: "Burghers and Freemen of New York 1675-1699", New York Historical Society Collections, 1910, vol. 43, p 77) He soon established himself as one of the leading citizens of New York. He was elected Alderman of the Dock Ward in 1712 and held that position for 22 consecutive years. In 1739, he was appointed Mayor, and retained that position until his death on Aug 13, 1744. Beginning in 1740, he lived in the official Mayor's residence at the head of Broad Street. The Abjuration Oath swore allegiance to King George "Lawfull and Rightfull King" as against all claimants to the Crown in the name of the late King James. John Cruger of New York signed the Oath of Abjuration on March 20, 1715 and listed his occupation as merchant.
