  • 2. Maria Magdalena D'USILE aka Magdeleine GILLE bpt 3 Dec. 1662 NY m. 1684 Abraham LE ROUX s/o Abraham LE ROUX & Jeanne DU FOUR

There is great confusion over Maria who md. Abraham LE ROUX, and Maria UZIELE aka Maria Oeyke who married my ancestor Leonard-Remi/Treny LE ROY, called by the Dutch first - Jonar LARUA then Jonas LARROWAY.

The Maria who md. Jonas LARROWAY began having children in 1704 and was still having them in 1723 at which time the Maria bpt 1662 was 61 years old.

The Maria who did marry Jonas LARROWAY, was Maria the daughter of Pieter UZIELLE & Cornelia DAMEN. This Maria was born ca 1686 in NY and at her marriage to Jonas in 1703 was listed as Maria Oyecke Zielle. Zielle is a variation on the UZIELE name.

Notes: The UZIELEs are a registered Huguenot line. I welcome any and all exchanges of information on this family or its collateral lines.

Notes: Albert Heymanse Roosa was sometimes listed as Allert Heymanse and Aldert Heymans. I am descended from his son Hymen Albert Roosa who married Anna Margriet Rosenvelt daughter of Claes Martenszen Van Rosenvelt. Albert Heyman lived in Wildwyck and later in Hurley, Ulster Co NY. He appears to have been a feisty individual and his name was often mentioned in court records. He had two daughters kidnapped by the Esopus Indians in the uprising of 1663. He later got both daughters back.

Notes: Jesias Bartley/Bartlett was the grandson of one John Bartlett an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut who arrived there before 1641. The family name seems to have been modified from Bartlett in Connecticut to Bartley in New York. Perhaps this was a Dutch influence? Almost of the family church records from the 1697 marriage of Jesias until the time of the American Revolution are in the Dutch Reformed Church and generally the marriages of this family were to persons of Dutch origin. Most of the descendants of Jesias seem to have moved to Dutchess Cty, starting around 1715 and were resident there until the time of the Revolution. They seem to have been closely associated with the Buys family there. At least two of the sons of Hendrick Bartley, Josiah and Michael were Loyalists who came to Ontario after serving in the KRRNY and settled in Fredericksburg Township.

Immigrant's Children: Gerret Gerretse b. 1665 Brooklyn;m.Cornelia de BEAUVOIS (only child of first wife)
Notes: Jan Gerretse DORLANDT settled first near the ferry on Fulton Street, and then moved to the village of Bedford (Brooklyn) by 1654. He and his son, Gerret Gerretse, are both mentioned in a number of land transactions in New Amsterdam (sources: Kings County Deeds and NY Genealogical and Historical Register). His name is on the list of those who signed the oath of allegiance to the English government in 1687, and he was elected a town commissioner of Brooklyn that year, a position which he filled till 1701 or later. He was a member of the Reformed Dutch church in Brooklyn 1677 and was an elder there in 1711. Children baptised in this church include Gerret Gerretse, Elias, Samuel, Christina, Gertrude, Rem, Mary, Anna, Elsie, and Jan. The DORLAND family can be traced in Kortenhoef until at least 1500. Before then, one Dutch researcher has traced the family back to Ghijsbrecht van Nijenrode "named Dorlant" & assistant of the "famous Jan van Egmond at Eastern 1419". His father was Gerrit (Gerard) Splinter van Ruwiel, shield-bearer, who m. Maria Persijn van Velsen and d. abt. 1397. Ghijsbrecht was a knight, "Master of Nijenrode, Velzen, Poel, etc." and m. 1) Belia van Leijenburg and 2) a daughter of Otto van der Poel. Ghijsbrecht d. between Aug 3 - Nov. 3 1396. One of Ghijsbrecht's four known children (not necessarily legitimate) was Jan Ghijsberts Dorlant, who is probably the grandfather of Jan Dorland of Kortenhoef. This ancestry certainly accounts for two of the common names encountered in the family: Gerrit & Jan. Our line of Dorlandts moved first to Long Island (near Oyster Bay) and then to Orange County, NY, where Charles DORLAND arrived about the time of the French & Indian War (1756). The family remained in Orange County, NY till the end of the 19th century, when our branch moved back to the NYC area, where I was born.
