Palatine German Pioneers - Merckel
Merckel Palatine FamilyThe Merckel name is found as Marical, Merkley, Merical and many other variationsJohann Frederich (Frederich) MaricalFriderich Marical [sic] is on the Hunter Lists 4 July 1710 with 3 persons over 10 yrs and 2 under 10. He was a Palatine to New York. The entry for 4 aug. 1710 gives the same numbers and a notation for his wife, the widow Mayin. The ledger states that Christoph May's widow married Frederic Marical.In Oct. 1710 the family is living beside Philip Helmer, who came from Habloch at Neustadt. On 8 and 9 Sept. 1715 Fredrerick Marical was naturalized under the Kingston Naturalizations. Anna Barbara with 6 children and Frederich were at Beckmannland in 1716. In 1718/19 Frederich Marical was taxed 10 pounds in Kingston, Ulster Co. New York, and 12 pounds in 1720/21. In 1728 he is listed as Frederik Merkel, freeholder of Kingston. Johann Matthias (Mathys) MaricalSponsors at bptsmarried Joh. Mathes Loffler - Gemeinsmann and butcher in Habloch. He was in the foot company of the Ulster Co. Militia in 1738. Martinus Marckell was naturlaized Oct. 1740 and called a farmer of Ulster Co. at this naturalization.After the death of Matheis Merkel we find his children making the following obligation to Margriet their mother; Know all men by these presents that we Fredrick Merkle, Johannis Merkle, Tury Hommel Jun., and Teanes Shue Jun., all of the County of Ulster and State of New York, William Merkle, Matthew Merkle, Lawrence Merkle and Hendrick Hendricks, all of the County of Albany and State of New York. Aforesaid are held and firmly bound unto Margaret Merkle of the township of Kingston in the County of Ulster aforesaid Widow in two hundred pounds lawful money of this State to be paid to said Margaret Merkle or her certain Attorney, her executors, Administrators or Assigns; for which payment, well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, and every by himself,for and in the whole, our heirs, Executors and Administrators. And of every(one) of us, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals, dated this twenty third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four.While the writer of this document spells the name Merkle, not all of the family are able to sign their own names. Matthews signature seems to spell it Merkel while Lawrence spelled it Marical and his e could be mistaken for a. Williams signature is very hard to distinguish just as it is on Lawrence's baptism record.
