Alternate Resources for Immigration Records

USA
Census

Can't find your ancestor's arrival year? The USA 1920 census has the year of naturalization. The 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 USA census have an immigration year. Access Ancestry.com's census records FREE for 7 days and find that all-important date.

Newspapers
If the exact date of arrival of a ship is known, you can read the arrival report in newspapers. For example, The New York Times which began publication in September 1851, is available at many large libraries. The type of vessel is normally indicated on the arrival report, which may also give information about events on the voyage. Sometimes names are also given, although full passenger lists are not. You can search the NY Times online! Search 1857-1880 or 1881-1906 These are off-site pay databases but you may be able to use a free trial offer to view them.

Land Records
Homestead Act of 1862

Diaries of William Lyon McKenzie King
Search the online diaries for instances of ship names, shipping lines (Cunard for example) and surnames. I searched under "Cunard" and found several hits. One is an entry for King's passage on board the Lucania from Liverpool to New York in December 1900. He gives an account of expenses for the voyage, such as the cost of deck chairs.

Canada
Census

Can't find your ancestor's arrival year? The 1901 Canadian Census has an immigration year. Access Ancestry.com's census records FREE for 7 days and find that all-important date.

Land Records
Immigrant settlers usually bought land soon after arrival in the new country. Land Records are useful in narrowing the time frame for immigration.

There is much to be found in these diaries! I found an entry concerning sailing to Montreal, and passing the ship S.S. Canada. Names of some passengers are given.
