SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS TO CANADA
Filling in the Gaps in Ships Passenger Lists to Canada Before 1865

Names of individual passengers on ships sailing to Canada in the 1850s were extracted from the Alms House Admission Foreigners & Nativity Records New York City, New York 1855-1858 These individuals sailed from their home countries to Canadian ports, then to New York in the 1850s and were admitted to the Almshouse for care.
Dating back to the colonial era, New York City assumed responsibility for its citizens who were destitute, sick, homeless, or otherwise unable to care for themselves. The city maintained an almshouse, various hospitals, and a workhouse on Blackwell's Island (now called Roosevelt Island) for the poor.
These Almshouse records provide the date of admission and name of the ship, port of departure, port of arrival and Captain's name plus other details. Since Canadian ships passenger lists did not have to be archived until 1865, these records will help fill in the gaps in Canadian passenger arrivals from 1850 to 1855. Remember that each date was given by the individual being admitted to the Almshouse, so the date of arrival is only as good as that person's memory.
Please also be aware that the records were difficult to read due to cramped or bad handwriting, as well as ink that faded with time.
