New York Immigration & Naturalization Records

1624-31 July 1855: No immigrant receiving station in New York to process immigrant ship arrivals

1 August 1855 - 18 April 1890: Castle Garden Receiving Station processed immigrant ship arrivals

19 April 1890 - 31 December 1891: Barge Office processed immigrant ship arrivals

1 January 1892 - 14 June 1897: Ellis Island processed immigrant ship arrivals

15 June 1897 - 16 December 1900: Barge Office processed immigrant ship arrivals

17 December 1900 - 1924: Ellis Island processed immigrant ship arrivals

Both NARA & LDS have films of New York passenger lists. Ships are on the reels in order of date of arrival. After you find your film order it into a nearby Family History Centre or request a lookup from NARA. Remember that the lists aren't always in exact chronological order.
