Spanish American War 1898

President William McKinley resisted war fever until February 15, 1898, when the battleship U.S.S. Maine mysteriously blew up in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, killing 250 sailors and marines. Spain was blamed and the U.S. declared war on April 25. It was one of the most successful and shortest wars in American history. Under the Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, Spain freed Cuba and gave the United States its colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines in exchange for $20 million. The war made the U.S. an international power.
