Annual return of lunatics: Thirsk Union 1844

Annual return of lunatics in the Thirsk Union dated 3 August 1844, giving names, ages, parish to which chargeable, where maintained, weekly cost of maintenance, whether lunatic or idiot, dangerous to himself or others, of dirty habits, and how long they have been of unsound mind. Includes:

- George Sadler aged 80 years, chargeable to Sowerby, and maintained in the Union workhouse. His weekly cost of maintenance is 3s 03/4d; he is an idiot, not dangerous to himself or others, not of dirty habits, and how long he has been of unsound mind is unknown, but it is for a considerable number of years

- John Barker aged 45 years, chargeable to Thirsk, and maintained in the Union workhouse. His weekly cost of maintenance is 3s 03/4d; he is a lunatic, dangerous to himself or others, not of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind for three or four years

- Mary Moore aged 46 years, chargeable to Thornton le Moor, and maintained in the Union workhouse. Her weekly cost of maintenance is 3s 03/4d; she is a lunatic, not dangerous to herself or others, not of dirty habits, and how long she has been of unsound mind is unknown, but it is for several years

- Elizabeth Hornby aged 64 years, chargeable to Thirsk, and maintained in the Union workhouse. Her weekly cost of maintenance is 3s 03/4d; she is an idiot, not dangerous to herself or others, not of dirty habits, and how long she has been of unsound mind is unknown, but she was in the asylum for several years

- Robert Kirby aged 25 years, chargeable to Carthorpe, and living with his brother at Carthorpe. His weekly cost of maintenance is 3s; he is an idiot, not dangerous to himself or others, of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind from childhood

- Thomas Buckle aged 25 years, chargeable to Hutton Sessay, and living with his father at Carlton Husthwaite. His weekly cost of maintenance is 2s 101/2d; he is an idiot, dangerous to himself or others at times, of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind from childhood

- Christopher Hall aged 38 years, chargeable to Kirby Knowle, and maintained in the York County Asylum. His weekly cost of maintenance is 7s 6d; he is a lunatic, dangerous to himself or others, not of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind for many years

- Jane Clarke aged 47 years, chargeable to Sowerby, and maintained in the York County Asylum. Her weekly cost of maintenance is 7s 6d; she is a lunatic, not dangerous to herself or others, not of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind for 15 years

- John Curry aged 32 years, chargeable to Topcliffe, and maintained in the York County Asylum. His weekly cost of maintenance is 7s 6d; he is a lunatic, dangerous to himself or others, not of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind for six years

- Ann Blaydes aged 46 years, chargeable to Knayton with Brawith, and living with her brother at Knayton. Her weekly cost of maintenance is 2s 6d; she is an idiot, not dangerous to herself or others, of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind from infancy

- William Richardson aged 54 years, chargeable to Sandhutton, and living with his wife at Sandhutton. His weekly cost of maintenance is 2s; he is a lunatic, not dangerous to himself or others, not of dirty habits, and has been of unsound mind for seven or eight years. He was in the asylum for three or four years

With covering letter for the above return dated 3 August 1844 from Matt. Bradley (on behalf of Jo. Rider solicitor at Thirsk and clerk to the Thirsk Union), to Lupton Topham esquire Clerk of the Peace at Northallerton

With further letter dated 17 August 1844 from Jo. Rider solicitor at Thirsk and clerk to the Thirsk Union to the Clerk of the Peace asking him to substitute "3 instead of 4" in the column headed "dangerous to themselves or others" in his summary of lunatics Date 3-17 Aug 1844
